For some, H.M.S. Onward is a lithe frigate, commanded by Captain Adam Bolitho. For most, onward is a word deriving, like some of the most beautiful and evocative in the language – seawardlandwardwindwardhomeward – from the Old English suffix weard, denoting direction of movement.

For me, it is the course of my life without Douglas.

These are the reflections and meditations of the flag captain, alone on the quarterdeck.

I cannot still the tides of time. I can only fix my eyes on the horizon, and steer by the heart’s compass on the vastness of this sea.

I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul.

Join me.
